New Trend, New Scam?

April 2, 2007 – 8:19 pm

There is a new trend on eBay Malaysia. I have experienced it myself and so have some other Sellers. There is a Buyer using female ID and name bidding and winning our items. She will reply to our payment notification days late and then claims that she is in England and will not be back to Malaysia in a long time.

She wants to pay by telegraphic transfer from her HSBC bank account and she wants our particulars and specific shipping mode. She also wants the exact shipping charge for the package to be delivered to a Malaysian address which she claims must be supplied or her bank would not approve her payment.

Not long later, in the few cases that I am familiar with, her ID has been NARU-ed.

Now, anyone familiar with online fraud would have heard of Nigerian scams where these Buyers claim to be somewhere in Europe or USA and want the package shipped by overnight delivery to a Nigerian address.

Somehow the case above really reminds me of a Nigerian scam but what and where is the connection? I am still trying to figure out though I am unwilling to be the guinea pig.
