Monitoring & Protecting Private Data Online
June 19, 2007 – 6:29 amIf you are in business, you will know that every day, you are handling private and confidential information. Although these data are private, they are transmitted daily over the internet via email or instant messenger. There may be a disclaimer at the footer of the email message, but does anyone spare a minute to read that note? I don’t think so.
Recently, an associate’s computer hard disk failed and he had to send the computer in for repairs. He did not back up his data and had to rely on the repaid shop to do it for him, hence compromising the confidential data of his company. These are but just two cases where private company information could be leaked out the general public.
What about unscrupulous employee who is out to create problems for the company? Leaking private and confidential information could cause the company to lose a business transaction or cause the share price to plunge just to name a couple of consequences.
It is because of these and many more similar issues that online data monitoring is one of the most important security measure that any company must take.
WebArgos is a company that specializes in tracking down private data that has been left in the public domain and eliminating these “public” evidence. The internet is so huge that no company could possibly run a business AND check if there are any documents that have been exposed to the public which may violate the company’s trademarks or confidentiality clauses.
This is where WebArgos comes in, painstakingly digging everything from every book and corner of the world wide web.
There is a new rule that says that if a company is unable to demonstrate in court that it has taken measures to prevent and eliminate posting to private date, the law interpreters it that the company has waived its right to confidentiality.
I feel that this issue is very important to every company, large or small. Ignorance is not bliss!
