Weird Business Practice
June 8, 2007 – 1:20 amThe other day, I was on the phone with a local courier company. I wanted to know the rates to send out a document to Kuala Lumpur but the clerk refused to tell me the charge after finding out that I do not have a corporate account with them.
I do not understand why she refused to let me know how much I have to pay, whether it is MYR5.20 or more even though they do offer walk-in service. Of course, I was slightly pissed off.
As a customer, it is my right to know the charge through the phone and if I am agreeable, I will drop off my document at their office. It is also my right as a smart shopper to find out the price from any or all the local companies their charges and then take my business to the company that offers me the best rate and customer service.
On the other hand, this morning, I called up DHL to find out the rates for my document to be sent from my hometown to Buffalo, New York. I was given the rate right to the nearest cent. This is the way to do business. To serve customers with their requests.
Naturally, for the first courier company, I did not ship my document through them. As for DHL, I will be giving them my business without feeling the need to find out the rates of its competitors even though DHL will be charging me MYR80.94.
Tell me, what sort of business practice has the first courier company adopted?
