Accuracy of Surveys

July 5, 2007 – 9:45 am

Sometime back, I registered myself with a long list of companies that pay us to participate in surveys. While I am contacted to take part in the initial suitability test, i am almost always not selected due to my location. It’s as if people in my city do not use modern facilities or technology. How wrong could they be?

So that got me wondering how accurate are surveys actually?

Some months back, there was a local condom survey that my friend participated in. He tembak-ed and managed to get himself a novelty gift. He told me to participate as well but I told him I am not going to because that is not a subject I am comfortable discussing when they need to know my personal particulars in the event that I am eligible for a novelty gift as well.

So this friend of mine said he will fill out the form for me with my particulars and he managed to get it accepted and I was sent a small gift.

You see, if my friend could do this, so could many other people. In this condom survey, the compensation for participating was a novelty gift but in many of the surveys that I joined, cash is paid, which is a greater motivation to get oneself accepted into the survey proper.

While I was mostly not accepted into the survey proper due to my location, my friends who are from other parts of Malaysia managed to get through to the survey proper and earned themselves a few bucks.

If I were desperate enough for the money, I could easily tick a different city from where I am and get through to complete the survey in its entirety and who is to check and double check if what I say in the survey is correct or not?
