Dark Mailer
July 26, 2007 – 6:00 amI have often wondered how scammers out to phish for sensitive data could send out email that are so real, making members thing that they are legitimate email. The headers, the sender and email address could easily fool the best of us. Any lapse in concentration could easily get us caught, like the time recently that I nearly got caught, luckily I was a tad more alert than they would have liked
Ah… blame it on lack of sleep!
A few days ago, I read about the underground programme called Dark Mailer which is used to do just this, after coming across this is a news report about the conviction of the Ma brothers who used this to phish for private, financial information from unsuspecting internet users.
I found further information on Dark Mailer on Wikipedia. While there may be some inaccurate information on the Wiki, it did give a clear picture of what it does. And it does nothing good for us genuine internet users. Of course, scammers beg to defer.
If you are interested to how phishing mails are sent to us, you may want to check out the Dark Mailer Wikipedia page.
