EON Bank Group’s MOL Freedom
August 31, 2007 – 9:37 amThe other day, I saw an advertisement on the newspapers of this new junior prepaid Mastercard. I say junior because it is available for children above 12 years old. I believe this is the ONLY card for children of that age group. While it is good that children can now own their very own prepaid debit Mastercard, I do not see WHY they should need one.
I know that it helps to cultivate a sense of proper personal financial management in kids but it does not help when the card charges are exorbitant! I was told that AmBank’s NexG Prepaid MasterCard is even cheaper but then this card is only for people above 18 years old.
I think that for people who are using these cards, as soon as they reach 18 years old, they should switch to Public Bank’s Visa Electron. Now, I am not touting this card because of personal gain because I get nothing in return BUT I have used it for a couple of years now and have recommended it to my friends who wanted to verify their PayPal account and they have all had a smooth experience.
What is good about Public Bank’s Visa Electron is that you just have to pay an annual fee of MYR24, and not MYR3 or so per month like these junior prepaid debit cards. Moreover, Public Bank’s Visa Electron is one of the few cards that promises cash back to their members at a rate of 0.5% for every Ringgit charged. If you charge your card regularly, you won’t even have to pay the annual fee of MYR24 because you would have earned it back from your purchases.
If you know of a better card, please share it with me and other readers!

I’m extremely disappointed with MOL Freedom’s customer service. I bought and sent in the application form 2 weeks ago. The customer service person told me the processing job should be completed within 10 working days. Then on Thursday, I received a missed call from them but I wasn’t at home. So I tried to call them back. Sadly, I was passed around from one person to another 4 times and in the end somebody hung me up. Imagine my frustration. Then on the next day I tried to call them again to check my application status. A guy asked for my personal details like IC, contact number, card number etc and say they’ll check and call me back within that day. Again, I was disappointed when I didn’t get any return calls. And wow, ever heard that customer support has weekend breaks? They do. I mean, I’m going to let them manage my money and personal information..How could i trust them in this case? I’m going to cancel my card soon..

Hi Coder,
Thank you very much for you feedback. I am sorry to hear that you have been given a hard time to activate your card. Have you tried going to an EON branch near you?
Also, if you are above 18 years old, I suggest that you apply for the Public Bank Visa Electron Card. Service charge is MYR24 per year but my friends and I have been using it without any major issues. Customer service is excellent too.

I find it really strange, but Coder’s comments have stretched across several sites already and they’ re all copy and paste. So far the only issue i’ve seen so far is when people don’t fill out the form correctly. The card is impossible to trace if the details aren’t in as it isn’t tied to a bank account of any sort which enables other cards to be checked.I believe that coder did not fill in the details correctly, and i believe that coder is refering to MOL customer care which does not work weekends. Eon however has a 24 hour hotline which he can use to call

Hi Zachary,
Thanks for stepping in to clear the air on customer service of both MOL and EON.
I realise that Coder has been leaving similar messages on forums and blogs. I believe this stemmed from his frustration.

Oh yes my apologies, i forgot to mention this but, normal eon bank staff can’t really help as the bank itself doesn’t give out the card. So some of the staff will be totally clueless about the card and its functions so they may have shuffled poor coder around a bit.

Hi Zachary,
Thanks for your clarification. Yes, I believe that Coder was given the runaround due to this confusion.

Cyberpatygal.
You are totally misleading. MOL Freedom Card never charge RM3 per month for monthly fee. Annual is RM15, but if used more than 12 times, it will be free.. The starter pack is RM25 but full fill with vouchers!
AMBANK NextG charge RM3 monthly regards of use or not!
Also Public Bank 0.5% rebate is totally nonsense. You still need to pay RM24 yearly and you only get waived if yearly usage more than certains thousands of ringgits. Plus you can only earn interests if deposit inside is RM5K. You think got ppl deposit 5K into prepaid Visa? Stupid Nonsense.
Please dun misleading readers.

Hi Vincent,
I truly appreciate your feedback but please read carefully. I DID NOT mention which card charges RM3 per month.
Also, Public Bank’s 0.5% is not nonsense. If your rebate is more than RM24 a year, then of course you do not have to take RM24 out of your pocket to pay your annual fee.
My friend told me that he did have interest for his Public Bank Visa Electron balance. But I told him I never get any. So thanks for letting us know that the minimum balance is RM5K. No wonder, I always keep less than RM100 in my card

thanks and good morning. Wow, happy sunday morning.
What i said is Public Bank quite kiasu. I just terminated my PB Visa Electron which aged 6 years old. I hate the crowd at PB Bank. They dun treat you like a valuable customer.. Too chinese style altho I am chinese too.
BTW, I just switch to Alrajhi Bank with their Visa Debit issued on the spot. excellent services and fast cheque clearing.
Hmm also I would like to highlight to you that on one of your post about Debit Card and ATM Card… you have misleading facts too.
Prepaid Card is one card with only prepaid money bank in and you dun earn any interests. Such example like Am Bank NextG, MOL Freedom, PB Visa Electron, Alliance Ikea Payment Card. You still can transfer money (credit card repayment) from your existing Deposit Saving Account.
WHereby Debit Card is those ATM cum Visa/Mastercard Debit Card. Such example like Alrahji Bank Visa Debit, Standard Chartered Debit Mastercard, Affin Debit Mastercard. They are directly link to Deposit/Saving Account.
and of course our in country MEPS ATM Bankcard. Work same like debit card but only on MEPS merchants, nor visa or mastercard.
Hope this is what you mean on your post. hehe
Thanks.

Hi Vincent,
Happy Sunday morning to you too. Thanks for your comments.
Sometimes I may not have written clearly enough that caused the reader to be confused.
But I understand your clarification as I have AMT, Debit and Credit card. I don’t have prepaid debit card, though, because it is expensive to maintain.
Zachary Ng works for MOL Freedom, by the way.

No, you have prepaid card, it’s your Public Bank Visa Electron lah… Prepaid cards charge for annual fees whereby Debit Card don’t, cause bank have your saving account. So they dun wanna charge.
