How To Call U.S. Toll Free Number?
August 4, 2007 – 5:48 pmRecently, I had occasion to call to a couple of US toll free numbers. They are either 1-800 or 888 numbers. I tried calling a few times but received error voice messages each time saying that the numbers do not exist.
Well, how does one call out to these numbers from Malaysia? Does anyone know? Can anyone guide me? Since they are toll free, we should not be billed for our calls but I could not dial directly.
Do I add an international and country code prefix [001]? I am stumped.
I tried checking on the Telekom Malaysia website but there is no information at all. Googling also did not yield any results but it did give me an idea of what to try. Maybe I will test them out.
Or do I just dial 103 and ASK the operator for assistance and get billed?

Well, you can call 1-800 (Toll Free) Numbers in the US of A (you just have to prefix a or 00 before the 1800) but you will be billed for International Long Distance calls by your operator. I have tried it once and it worked.
Actually, even the person whom you are calling up in the US on the Toll Free number will also get billed as any calls received on that number will be charged. So try to find out a regular number of that person so that atleast that person will not get billed.

Hi Javed,
Thanks for your input. That means I will be dialling the toll free number like I normally would for a call to the USA but that really defeats the purpose of a toll free number. I’ll try, though.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it!

Well the toll free number is meant only for the callers in USA. When you call from a US number you are not charged but they recover the money from the called party. But when you call from another country, your service provider cannot charge the called party, so the only option they have is to charge you.

Hi Javed!
What confused me was that I was given two toll free numbers, one for within the US and one for outside. Now I know that it’s actually like a normal long distance call. It’s better to dial the toll free number then. Thanks for clearing the air for me
