Virtual Speaking Characters

August 10, 2007 – 10:02 am

The other day when I wrote my post, Implementing Live Support, I forgot what people call those “talking human”. Well, I just found out that they are called Virtual Speaking Characters. Although I read that these are good for ecommerce sites and could convert random browsers into purchasers, I personally do not like them. Some look very ugly as well, with the legs chopped off.

I remember a long time ago, when I was very into online chatting, and one of the programmes I used was CheetaChat, and there was something called Merlin, I did not like it. It looked cute, of course, but I could not figure out why it was there and what was its function.

Also, if you have a lousy internet connection, a virtual speaking character would certainly spoil your browsing experience. The same goes for flash enhanced websites. I personally tend to avoid those so I will not subject my browsers to these elements.

Also, virtual speaking characters are not effective if the browser does not have audio on his computer or if his speakers are off. Too bad the sales pitch of these virtual speaking characters will fall on deaf ears then!
