Added Value In Reverse Charge Calls

September 21, 2007 – 12:36 pm

In early August, I had to make numerous international calls to the United States. I was given a toll free number and a reverse charge call number. I used the reverse charge number although it was a hassle to get through since Telekom outsourced the service to a foreign telephone services company. I also found out that even though the number may be toll free, it only works it I am dialling it from the United States, which I am not and calling from Malaysia, I would be charged the normal IDD rate.

Anyway, I made so many calls I was sceptical that they were really free and with each minute that I was kept on hold, I reminded myself not to be shocked when the bill arrives the following month.

Well, the bill has indeed arrived and no, I was not charged for any of those calls at all. However, I was charged MYR4 for the call I made to Telekom to find out how to make a reverse charge call. Isn’t that Ironic? I don’t even know where the MYR4 came from because they stated the rate as 4sen per unit and I remember that it was only a short call. Sigh…..

  2. Please let us know how you made the reverse charge call in Malaysia.
I have a cellphone through Digi, and have been unable to access the 101 operator.
    Thanks.

  3. Hi JD,

To call collect from Malaysia, dial 1-800-813-189.

Let the operator know that you would like to make a reverse charge call. Provide the number to call. The operator will ask you for your name as well.

The operator then connects the call and assk the recepient if they are willing to accept a call from you. If they say OK, you will be connected.

By the way, if the operator asks if you would like to charge the call to your credit card, say NO.

Also, if you call a toll-free 1-800 number from your mobile phone, you will be charged local rate.

Dialing a toll-free 1-800 number is only free if you were dialling from a fixed line.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you require further information.
