Technology vs. Human Intelligence

September 6, 2007 – 9:08 am

The other day, I received a spam mail from a company seeking my business. You see, I have listed my webstore on a local directory that is owned by my friend. So this company, I think they ran a script to harvest all the email addresses that are listed on the site.

And then they told me in the spam mail that the URL of the directory, which they thought was my site, is ranked at number X on Google, has X back links and has the potential to reach X position in the search engine for any keyword that I choose.

So, obviously this company, that is said to be based in the United Kingdom, but helm by people of Chinese descent, is offering me search engine optimization services. However, if they cannot even differentiate an advertiser (me) from the publisher (my friend’s directory), then how do they expect me and other people on their spam mailing list to place trust on them?

My friend, the directory owner, told me that these companies use script to harvest email addresses and then send out mass mail to them all. The script must have made a mistake.

Well, I say, technology still cannot beat human intelligence.
