Van Gogh’s Wheat Fields

September 26, 2007 – 1:35 pm

Have you heard of the Van Gogh art that will be auctioned by Sotheby’s this November? This piece called “The Fields” or “Wheat Fields” is said to be one of the last works of Vincent Van Gogh just almost three weeks before his death. It is expected to start bid at US$34 million. What an obscene amount of money this is.

I am not an art lover but I have read Vincent Van Gogh’s biography and know the kind of tortured life he led. They say that most artists go through these emotions and I think they are right.

Anyway, I do not understand why artwork like these can command this kind of money. Let’s say this was a piece by an unknown. How much can it fetch? I can draw uglier pieces that The Fields. Will anyone pay me half of US$34 million? Will they only pay such an amount only when I am dead? Or never, dead or alive?

*Sigh* I will never understand rich people, investment not withstanding!
