In Case of Emergency, Call 032328608
October 1, 2007 – 9:21 amLast evening, I was at the ATM lobby of HSBC bank in my hometown. I was trying to withdraw money through the machine but I wasn’t sure which account to withdraw from as they changed the format, as far as I know. I got my withdrawal requests rejected a few times and I am not even sure if I would be charged or if my card would be jammed due to multiple errors.
Anyway, I saw a sign there on the front of each machine which says to call a telephone number if we require assistance. That number is a local number that is only available during office hours. There is a different number, sort of like a national helpline, that is available 24 hours a day. The notice states that “In case of emergency, call 032328608″.
Since it was already 8.30pm, I dialled that 24-hour helpline. Yup, it was an outstation called but hey, I’ve got 250 free call minutes, so!
Since it was after office hours, I expected my call to be picked up a little slower, it happens every where, right? But, I NEVER expected the line to no longer be in service! Can you imagine my surprise??
Why the hell place the number on the ATM telling people that they CAN call the number if they need emergency assistance when the line is no longer working?? It is just like a placebo. To reassure us that everything will be all right IF WE NEED IT. And I don’t think there have been people calling up that number recently.
How disappointing. I expected better from a foreign bank, frankly!
