Medical Insurance & Discount On Medical Fees

October 8, 2007 – 2:08 pm

My sister told me that she has to get a medical procedure done that involves general anesthesia. Well, it sounds like something major. The bill is expected to be US$1200 AFTER medical insurance coverage.

Isn’t that exorbitant? I always say, USA may be medically advanced but they should at least make medical treatment AFFORDABLE, right?

The weirdest thing to me is that my sister was told that if she pays the fees in one lump sum, she would qualify for a 20% discount. Wow… do they think that this is a BUSINESS? Of course, to save $240, my sister has agreed to pay in one lump sum but still, this is NOT business.

I don’t know how many people can afford medical fees of $1200, that is AFTER insurance, when I read that there are many homeless people in the US, people who can’t afford even simple things like a haircut or school supplies, etc. And I also heard that not many people can afford to go to the movies or to eat out. Here, these are so common things that we do them daily. Is the American Dream even real for the majority of the people?
