What I Think Of Banks
October 21, 2007 – 6:33 pmSometime back, I wrote a post whereby I read the websites of a few leading banks to compare saving accounts and see which is better. I have so far compared four major banks, where I have a savings account with two of them and a friend of mine holds savings accounts with the other two banks.
I find that the smaller banks will have a higher interest rate while the larger ones do not pay as well. As for a foreign bank, they do not even state the interest rate that they are giving. At least I was not able to find it on their website or in my online account.
I actually hold two accounts with a leading bank which everyone says is a “blood sucker”. This means that they are notorious with their hefty bank charges. The only reason I am with them is because of their large network and this would be easier for my Buyers to pay me for their purchases.
I do agree that they are blood suckers, though, because how can they justify their charges for ATM withdrawal from the fifth time and above for the month when the money I am withdrawing is my own? To prevent being charged, I am withdrawing more money each time but that means I am losing interest also. I can’t win, can I??
I don’t have a current account locally but I have what Americans call a Checking account. In Malaysia, current accounts are not given interest and I think that they should because I know that banks are using our deposits to “turn” and invest. That is why I think that although we are keeping our money rather safely in banks, we are actually not getting maximum benefit from them.
