Festive Decorations At Shopping Complexes

February 28, 2008 – 9:48 am

If you have a physical store, you will have to spend time, money and resources keeping up with the various festivities throughout the year and decorate your store according to the theme. As an online Seller, I feel lucky that all I need to do is to update my homepage!

I took these photos of a fish pond with my Apple iPhone a couple of weeks ago. This was set up in conjunction with Chap Goh Meh, or the 15th night of the Chinese lunar calendar, which also marks the end of the Chinese Lunar New Year and is also known as “Chinese Valentine’s Day”. Wow, that was a mouthful!

Shoppers really loved this elaborate set up, especially the children who were thrilled with the koi fish, which you can see from this photo below. Some of the shoppers even purposely brought along fish food for the kids to feed the fish.

You see, it is during festivities like these that the management of shopping complexes try to out do each other with decorations and activities that would attract shoppers. People are very visual creatures. If they like what they see, they will come again.

My cousin used to work as a designer-cum-artist at the then top shopping complex in Ipoh and he told me that his team had to come up with all sorts of creative ideas to decorate the complex and they must not repeat their ideas or people will REMEMBER!

Although I think that it is an interesting job, my cousin was glad to be on his way to work in another field. He is artistic but he did not enjoy the task of dismantling what he had painstakingly designed and set up! Of course, no matter how beautiful something is, they can’t display it forever, right? Just like the fish pond above, it is no longer there. Luckily, I managed to get a few shots.
