Everyone Is Worried

June 14, 2008 – 10:57 am

My friend, Wei, who is a pharmacist in Singapore, told me that she has to increase her mother’s allowance in view of the rise in fuel prices and electricity tariff in Malaysia. Wei has the advantage of earning Singapore Dollar which is more than two times the value of the Malaysian Ringgit.

However, she tells me that with the impending arrival of a new baby, she has to really tighten her belt and look for ways to reduce monthly expenditure. Wei says that as long as pharmaceutical companies are not affected by the economic downturn, she would be safe but it is so difficult to predict.

Some of my friends tell me that their companies are downsizing while there are a handful that are hiring even more people. A few of my friends, who run their own companies, decide to move their business home. Running a home-based business definitely reduces their capital outlay but this is not suitable for ever type of business.

It looks like everyone is worried about the effects of escalating fuel prices.
