Marketing Trickery

June 3, 2008 – 6:52 pm

I was shopping for toiletries at Guardian last evening and when I was about to leave, at the door, one of the staff approached me and asked me if I wanted to do a little charity for the breast cancer charity drive organised by Guardian and Pride Foundation. She told me that it is only RM2 a card and I would be able to enjoy 20% off selected brand names from 2nd June to 4 July, 2008.

I did buy the card, after all, it is only RM2 and it is to support their charity drive, but I was feeling cheated because it was 2nd June yesterday which means to say that the offer of 20% had already started.

You may think that it is “only” RM2 but it is not the amount of money in question. Tell me which customer does not like a little savings here and there? If the offer period has yet to start, then by all means, corner me at the door but yesterday was the first day and I thought that it would be good business practice to sell the card to me at the counter so that I would be able to get 20% off there and then!
