Selling On Behalf

June 19, 2008 – 9:10 am

A couple of people approached me to place their items for sale in my store. One of them is a friend of mine while the other is a stranger who contacted me via email which I placed in an online directory.

In my friend’s case, I do not mind selling on his behalf but he wants me to help him do EVERYTHING pertaining to selling and he is going to share 50% of the profits to me only.

As you know, fuel prices have raised so much, it is not viable to help him by placing his items in my store, plus promoting, advertising and then doing all the follow up work like replying to email enquiries, packing and shipping. As you may know, I do not impose a surcharge on shipping and handling so selling one item at a time is really no longer profitable.

Then for the case of the stranger, it is simple. I do not have trust on her. I don’t even know her. By selling her items in my store, I am placing my Seller reputation on the line. If she fails in shopping items out to my Buyers, then I can forget about being in this business already?

What are your thoughts? Would you sell another person’s item no matter if you know him/her personally?
