Selling Our Personal Data

June 27, 2008 – 10:43 pm

The other day, I was talking to a friend about how companies are making use of our personal particulars and sharing these data with other departments of the same company, or giving or even selling them to other companies so that they could approach us with their services.

I personally feel that it is unethical because the personal data that we have on record is for a particular service only. At no point did we agree that they could use our data for other marketing purpose but then right now, many companies are using marketing tactics like these and there is nothing we could do except to “boycott” these companies by not giving them our business.

So far, I have had people selling me credit cards and insurance and I have never even done any business or had any dealings with them. I didn’t question how they managed to get hold of my details. Must have been provided by the cellular provider or bank.
