CIMB Cheques Still Stuck
July 11, 2008 – 9:03 amI wrote on 5th July, 2008 that CIMB cheque clearing system has been down and that my cheque of RM1000 is stuck. Well, luckily I am not desperate for the money. I read on forums that HSBC [Malaysia] is also suffering from the same glitch though I am unable to confirm this because I am still waiting for the receipt from the issuer of my RM110 HSBC cheque.
Apparently, this glitch has been on-going in early June, 2008. Can you imagine how many people are inconvenienced because of this? Some people may even have to pay fines or interest because their money is delayed.
I think it is bad business practice and customer service for banks affected by this cheque clearance glitch to not inform customers that there may be a delay if they are accepting cheques so that customers could opt for other ways of accepting payment.
At this point of writing, my cheque of RM1000 is still stuck when funds have already been cleared by the issuing bank on 30th June, 2008. I think I need to go and bang the manager’s table or something. Even if they are clearing cheques manually, if you show them you mean business, they will find a way to process your cheques first.

I had the same problem also. I called up the branch, and they asked me to fax over my deposit slip. The next day, they manually cleared the cheque.
You can try that instead of banging on the manager’s desk like a lot of Malaysians would do. (When it comes to bad food, or bad service, Malaysians would first keep quiet and suffer, then suddenly Incredible Hulk breaks out and create a scene).

Thats a weird glitch I’ve ever heard. This is not expected from a renowned bank like HSBC. Hope your cheque will be cleared soon. Good luck.

I’m not sure about HSBC. I’ll be depositing a check with them next week and we shall see.
