PayPal “Only” For eBay.com
September 25, 2008 – 10:49 amSome of you may remember, or even experienced, eBay Australia’s payment policy change in the middle of the year where the only mode of payment allowed for all eBay Australia transactions was by PayPal.
The idea was scrapped soon after but it prompted Australian regulators to begin an anti-competition investigation against eBay. In short, the plan did not work out and eBay vehemently denied that they plan to implement PayPal only for all their marketplaces.
However, yesterday, eBay issued a site update announcement that they are implementing payment by PayPal only at the end of October, 2008, to create a more secure trading environment. Alongside PayPal, eBay will also allow payment by ProPay, credit and debit card and payment upon pickup (cash). Sellers will no longer be able to accept payment by money order or cheques. Neither will they be able to accept payment through Google Checkout or Checkout by Amazon. This basically means that eBay is trying to kill off competition.
The above payment options will apply to all items traded on eBay except for big ticket items like real estate, vehicles, enterprise equipment and adult (?) items.
I am all for “killing the competition” but as an online seller, I believe that we should provide as many payment options to our buyers to make payment for their purchases. In short, the easier it is for them to pay, the higher our sales volume.
However, this move by eBay is only curbing Sellers but I guess if this is successfully implemented, those who still feel that it is viable to stay with eBay selling and buying would have to play by their rules.

My name is Brandon Crotts, I am the product manager at ProPay and I know that many people are upset about the changes that eBay is making but we are really excited about being selected as one of the payment options. We hope that we can be a highlight to what eBay has been doing.
