Radical Changes on eBay UK in 2009

October 12, 2008 – 10:38 am

eBay UK will be implementing radical changes in 2009, in a bid to further protect buyers.

I really could understand why they are bringing in these changes given the rate of fraud on eBay and the money that Buyers lose to scammers on eBay but I always believe that eBay or other online trading/auction sites should make it easy for people to sell and buy.

The new changes that will be implemented in 2009 would be the following:

Feedback Revision
Identity Confirmation
Annonymisation of emails
Postage and Packing cap
DSR transparency

The new policy that irks many eBay sellers is not the cap on postage and packing, particularly in the media and mobile phone categories but compulsory free postage and packing for DVDs.

Although on the surface, this does not affect non-DVD sellers, many are concerned that this policy will spread to other categories as well. As it is, trading on eBay is competitive and profit margin is low unless one enjoys volume sales but isn’t it preposterous of eBay to dictate how much one could charge across the board affecting all sellers of DVDs one Bay?

I think that to curb sellers who overcharge on postage, packing and handling, eBay should implement a FLAG system where potential buyers could flag these sellers; bringing the attention of eBay to them and be served a warning to reduce their P&P failing which their listings will be removed.

  2. Hi. You didn’t happen to hear if these changes were supposed to impact US eBay customers did you? I’ve pretty much stopped using eBay altogether due to the fraud rampant on the site. I used to be an avid user, but now I only use it to sell high value items like used computer equipment where the potential profit margin can exceed all the little fees that make selling low margin inexpensive items unprofitable.

  3. Hi Karen,

As far as I know, changes will only be implemented on eBay UK for the time being.
