eBay will soon be making insurance a seller’s responsibility, whereby all items shipped must be insured in an effort to protect buyers in the sense that items purchased on eBay will be delivered safely. Some people think that this is an effort to boost up total sale price so that sellers have to pay a higher Final Value Fee.
Whatever the case, I have often been asked whose responsibility it is to buy insurance. While I think that it is the seller’s responsibility to ensure that packages sent out are packed securely, I also know that once the package leaves our hands, it is out of our control.
I don’t think sellers are obligated to buy insurance for all packages but they should let the buyer know that this is an option and if they want to insure, they have to pay for it.
On the other hand, getting the cost of insurance included in shipping or even the cost of item would make shopping on eBay less complicated for the buyer. I think that at the end of the day, it just needs getting used to for both parties.
