The Great Singapore Sale Gimmick
June 22, 2010 – 11:31 amSo I went to Singapore last week for three days to attend three exhibitions and for shopping. While I had an eye-opening experience visiting the exhibitions, I have to say that the Great Singapore Sale that I was so looking forward to was a gimmick.
Nothing that I saw in Singapore was cheaper than the same items sold here in Malaysia. Nothing in Singapore is not available in Kuala Lumpur, and at a cheaper price too. And the sad thing is that the cheap stuff in Singapore are all actually from China, which are also available here in Malaysia.
As mentioned in my previous post, I didn’t buy anything simply because it’s just not worth buying the same thing at almost double the price, even though I had every intention to get something in Singapore as a souvenir for myself.
Although I did see many placards that screamed discounts of up to 80%, and truly, that’s pretty tempting, after checking with my friends who live in Kuala Lumpur and familiar with the prices there, I found that even after giving allowance for fluctuation of currency exchange, there actually was no “discount” at all. What a disappointing shopping trip it was!

Ouch. This is actually a season where most retailers will try to clear their stocks as much as they can to get ready for their next season sale.
Much as I would like to agree with you, there’re really some good buys here and there.

That is why I love to go to Johor every weekends because nothing is cheap in Singapore.

I just came back from KL weekend last week and couldn’t agree with this post more. Padini was having a clearance sale and you could buy decent work clothes starting RM$9.00 and you can’t get it in SG. Ok, SG doesn’t have Padini. Look at Etude House (EH) – I bought a bottle of nail polish @ EHSG for S$5.90 per bottle and the same bottle @ EHMY for RM$5.90 less 20% = RM$4.72.
Exchange rates aside, where’s the sale Singaporeans are looking for?

it should be call the GSCS – the Great Singapore Con Sales! bargains in s’pore r rare coz shops rentals r so expensive, the retailers can’t afford to sell anything cheap even if they want to..
